Successional Effects of No-Till Cover Cropping with Black Oat (Avena strigosa) vs. Soil Solarization on Soil Health in a Tropical Oxisol

چکیده
Black oat (Avena strigosa) is a cover crop with great potential for weed suppression and erosion control while conserving soil moisture. Little known about the of black enhancing food web structure ecosystem services in tropical Oxisols. Two-year field trials were conducted Hawaii to compare three pre-plant treatments: (1) (BO) as followed by no-till practice (previously managed cash rotation conservation tillage 7 years); (2) bare ground (BG) conventional planting (3) tilling solarization (SOL) fallow weeds 5 years then summer 2 years). Various properties using nematodes health indicators monitored throughout subsequent corn (Zea mays) crops. SOL served negative treatment manage plant-parasitic but be destructive web. No-till cropping BO resulted higher levels volumetric moisture, capacity, organic matter, supported fungal-dominated decomposition pathway trial I more structured nematode communities than BG II. This study provides evidence that improves water following continuous system Oxisols if biomass high (36 tons/ha). However, Oxisol decreased macroporosity increased bulk density, which not favorable outcomes infiltration. On other hand, was successful generating lethal temperatures suppress infiltration both reduced matter moisture years, even when failed generate second year.

Cover crop root contributions to soil carbon in a no-till corn bioenergy cropping system
Crop residues are potential biofuel feedstocks, but residue removal may reduce soil carbon (C). The inclusion of a cover crop in a corn bioenergy system could provide additional biomass, mitigating the negative effects of residue removal by adding to stable soil C pools. In a no-till continuous corn bioenergy system in the northern US Corn Belt, we used CO2 pulse labeling to trace plant C from ...
متن کاملTransferability and utility of white oat (Avena sativa) microsatellite markers for genetic studies in black oat (Avena strigosa).
Preservation and use of wild oat species germplasm are essential for further improvement of cultivated oats. We analyzed the transferability and utility of cultivated (white) oat Avena sativa (AACCDD genome) microsatellite markers for genetic studies of black oat A. strigosa (A(s)A(s) genome) genotypes. The DNA of each black oat genotype was extracted from young leaves and amplified by PCR usin...

Combining effects of soil solarization and grafting on soilborne pathogens, plant height and yield in cucumber were compared in a greenhouse of Bati Akdeniz Agricultural Research Institute located in Antalya in 2008 fall season. The experiment was set in split plot design containing; 1, 2, 4 and 5 months soil solarization (MSS), and non-solarized control plots (NSC) on which grafted Maximus F1+...
متن کاملLong-term trends in nitrous oxide emissions, soil nitrogen, and crop yields of till and no-till cropping systems.
No-till cropping can increase soil C stocks and aggregation but patterns of long-term changes in N2O emissions, soil N availability, and crop yields still need to be resolved. We measured soil C accumulation, aggregation, soil water, N2O emissions, soil inorganic N, and crop yields in till and no-till corn-soybean-wheat rotations between 1989 and 2002 in southwestern Michigan and investigated w...
